Research: Online Service Provider Assessment Project: Methodology: Web Test Suite
The web test suite is designed to help determine the specific mechanism by which
filtering software operates and the configuration settings (i.e. sites blocked, keywords
blocked, blocking scores, etc.) of a particular filtering software installation.
The suite consists of sets of web pages containing content designed specifically to test
filtering software. For example, some test suite web pages contain the lists of test
words from
Appendix D: Word Lists. Some pages contain a single
word from one of the lists repeated a certain number of times so as to determine what
number of repetitions triggers the filtering action. A single repetition trigger
indicates an unsophisticated filtering mechanism with a complete block of a given word.
Using results from a variety of multiple repetition triggers, it is possible to
determine the relative scoring that a particular filtering software installation uses
for blocking words. If words related to a certain topic or constituency are blocked with
greater severity than other innocuous or objectionable word categories, then a bias against that topic content or constituent community can be proven. Some pages are
designed to test what buffer size, if any, the filtering software uses for proximity
detection of blocked words.
